Frequently Asked Laptop Tech Questions Table of Contents
Why is my screen blank?Make sure the computer and the monitor are plugged in and turned on. Touch a key and move the mouse in case the screen saver has engaged. If it has engaged the screen will come on slowly as the monitor warms up. If you have a laptop, you may have to hit the reboot button to revive the computer from standby mode. Back to Top
What is standby mode?Standby mode allows your computer to rest when not in use, but still be ready to turn on faster when you need to use it. It saves electricity and wear and tear on your laptop's devices. It does so by turning off or lowering the power consumption of such items as the hard drive, LCD screen backlight, and the central processor unit. Back to Top
When I close my laptop does it turn off?Like the refrigerator light, it can be difficult to tell if your laptop has turned off when you close the lid. Windows XP allows you to determine what happens when the laptop is closed. You can set Windows to do nothing, enter standby mode, or turn off. If it turns off, the power light on the front of the laptop will turn off; otherwise the light will remain on. Back to Top
How do I turn on my laptop's touchpad? The touchpad is enabled by default; however if you wish to enable tapping, or tap and drag features, you will need to go to Control Panel > Mouse > Device Settings > Settings > Tapping > Click on the Enable Tapping checkbox. Back to Top
Why is there a rubber stick in the middle of my keyboard? Many laptop computers give you several ways to control the pointer on your screen. You can use the touchpad, an external USB mouse, or you may use the pointing stick. The pointing stick resides in the middle of your keyboard and moves the pointer by the use of your finger. Place your index finger on the pointing stick and push up, down, left, or right. The pointer on the screen will move in the corresponding direction. Back to Top
There's no parallel port so how do I connect my printer? Many new computers do not include a serial or parallel port, as they have become legacy technologies. The new technology included on these computers is the USB port. You should use the USB cable provided with your printer to connect to the computer if available on your printer model. If your printer requires a parallel port connection, you can purchase a USB parallel port adapter from your local computer supply store. Back to Top
Does the laptop have a built-in network wireless card? Some laptops come with a wireless card built-in. If yours did not, you may be able to order your laptop with a wireless network card built-in. You may also order an external wireless network card, or an external USB Bluetooth device for wireless connections. Also an Infrared connectivity device may be built in, as well as the wireless antenna that many wireless network cards require for operation. Back to Top
What is Bluetooth?Bluetooth is a relatively new, inexpensive, and easy to use wireless technology. It can transmit at a speed of 721 kbps in a single direction (half-duplex) or 432.6 kbps in a bi-directional mode (full-duplex). Its main advantage it that it requires no user intervention, as each device senses other Bluetooth enabled devices in its proximity that it has been enabled to contact. Most new laptops come enabled with software to work with Bluetooth devices; however you may still need to purchase a USB Bluetooth device. Back to Top
